The Elements App Reviews

20 Customer Reviews:

awesome app idea and design, however could be much better for the 20 price tag with basic ‘nerdy’ information such as the angular momentums and spins and quantum numbers etc… for the upper chemistry/physics students / enthusiasts who need to know !!

I had no problems downloading and installing this magnificent app. Its every bit as beautiful as the iOS versions and, I think, is essential to anyone interested in the periodic table.

I bought this app, opened it up, and two hours later realized I should probably get back to doing some homework instead of looking at all the information of every element. As a Chemical Engineer currently in college I absolutely LOVE this app, it works very well and is a very aesthetically pleasing and information packed way to present the periodic table. It runs well, and you just cant help but love the song at the beginning :)

I ordered this for me and for my school. We have the app, the books, and the card sets. Our students love it all from ages 6 to middle school. The addition of the Elements song with all of the beautiful photos of the elements is perfect. The supporting information is really comprehensive but does not feel like a textbook. A real gem for any age! Congratulations on a masterpiece!

This app was a showstopper on iPad years ago when iPad first came out, and it’s charm has not diminished. I love reading about the elements. This app is what sparked my interest in chemistry years ago, and it’s even better on my mac.

I feel like the app could be really cool however, none of the images will load and It often stops responding which causes me to have to force quit the app very often. I bought the app right after I installed Mavricks so I’m hoping that is the issue and a update will come out soon.

This is a truly epic and mesmerizing app… even without the 3D graphics. I actually own the book, and I though it would be really cool to get it on my computer as well. The problem is that, for now at least, none of the rotatable, three dimensional pictures of the elements will not load. The flat pictures will load, however, like the Eagle Nebula for Hydrogen or the Seal of California. Just none of the rotationals. Once that is fixed, I’m sure it will be a postitvely mesmerizing experience, and once that is fixed, I will give it five stars. So, non-Mavericks users who are into chemistry, is this app right for you, and is it worth the twenty dollar price? Absolutely. And even if you are a Mavericks user, it’s still fantastic. The labs and video demonstrations load and play perfectly, and are much more extensive across more elements than I had imagined. Theo Gray’s witty commentary into the life of elements and our society just never gets old. And soon enough, they’ll have the whole thing figured out and it will be the best twenty dollars I’ve ever spent. Until then, it’s up to you. ***UPDATE: Version 1.0.5*** I was jejoicing when I saw “The Elements” on the updates list. As it turns out, I was a bit disappointed. When I say a bit, I mean a lot. Like, absolutely NO improvement disappointment. Come on, Touch Press! On my late 2012 iMac 27-inch, running the new Mavericks version 10.9.1, NOTHING has changed! I really want to love this app, but it’s impossible to when it’s biggest selling point is missing.

Finally, a release that fixes the issue that you couldn’t see the 3D images and rotate them. Overall, it’s a very good application and educational. I would like to see more on HOW they get the elements, such as mining or how gases are collected, basically, where do we find the elements in nature or in the lab? overall, it’s good and I am happy with my purchase. I would recommend, now with the latest version upgrade.

If you’re using a late 2011 15" Macbook Pro, don’t buy this app. When I launched the application, I was presented with a black screen… and that was it. None of the menu items do anything, and when you try to use the Help functionality, you’re simply told that "Help isn’t available for The Elements." At least they don’t sugar coat it.

I bought this app and I thought from the good reviews to give it a try. There was this one guy on here who gave it one star saying it didn’t work for him on his 15’. I can confirm that on newer Macbooks this doesn’t work at all on. I have both a 2010 Macbook Pro and a 2014 Macbook Pro Retina and the app works fine in the 2010 Macbook, but doesn’t work at all on my new Macbook. I just get a black screen and nothing else, I tried restarting and haven’t received any results. I wouln’t recommened this product to anyone with a newer verison of Mac becuase I feel you’d run into the same problem as I did. Can’t really rate the app since I never used it, I really wish they would fix this already!!!!!!!!!

This app is great except that it stopped working on all computers that I have upgraded to Yosemite. I filed a support request with the developer weeks ago but have not received any response at all. The Elements should be marked for sale for 10.7-10.9 and not compatible with 10.10. # Update # On my older 2011 13” MacBook Pro hardware the app runs with no issues in Yosemite. I have also discovered a workaround on the MacBook Air and retina MacBook Pro to make it functional. - Launch The Elements.app and get a black screen - Use the Elements menu to select an element. - The element will render and you can get back to the periodic table home screen by clicking the home button. Once you load the first element via the menus, the app works normally. It seems pretty clear that there is something minor going wrong here. If Touch Press would issue a patch to fix the issue on new Macs then the app is definitely 5 stars for the conten. If it doesn’t work correctly on your hardware it will make you sad unless and until you figure out the incantation to workaround the intial view loading as a black screen.
